We show our students the importance of diversity with the education on the different breed of horses. All breeds are important and have different jobs. Humans are the same, we are all important with variety talents to share. We emphasize the challenge for a student is to be curious about all things. We want to help students change their perception of school. There should be a curiosity to learning, leading to knowledge. Knowledge should be applied and practiced, not just memorized.
Our equine friends have many lessons to teach us. In many ways, they can capture the attention of the human on a much deeper level than traditional therapies. Emotional intelligence, sensory integration and impulse control are just a few things we can draw from these 1000-pound beings.
One of the ways to communicate with a horse is through body language. We believe this is one of the most important skills in life as well, human to human. Body language has a way of allowing children to show either their vulnerability or their courage. We utilize both the students and the animals body language as a positive teaching point, illuminating the student’s true self.
How does a horse learn? Same as humans, through a series of trial and error. We must connect with the horse the same as the teacher connects with the student. Finding ways to make them curious enough to learn what we must teach.
Our agricultural programs round out our equine programs by taking the fear out of “getting dirty” and showing the important links between earth, humans and animals. We believe teaching our students sustainability can take their fear out of their future.
